Disquise Nicks and Scratches on Furniture

Shoe polish is a great way to hide nicks and scratches on furniture. I tried it for the first time today, and it worked great. I have an entertainment center with a cherry finish, and it had a number of small nicks and scratches. I use a cordovan-color shoe polish to hide the blemishes – they are hardly visible now!

Here is what you do:

  1. To fill a scratch, look for a shoe polish paste that matches the furniture’s finish.
  2. Apply the polish to the scratch or blemish using a cotton swab.
  3. Let the polish dray for 10 to 15 minutes.
  4. Gently buff with a clean, soft cloth

If you don’t like the way it looks, wipe it away with mineral spirits.

How to Get Cut Roses to Last Longer

My husband often buys me red roses like the ones I had when we got married in 1966. They still are my favorite flowers, but they don’t last very long.

I saw the following info in a magazine and plan to use it the next time I get roses. Hopefully it will help the roses stay pretty for a longer time.

  1. Wrap the flowers in brown wrapping paper to protect them.
  2. With a knife, cut approximately 1/4 inch off the stems.
  3. Place them in 1 inch of boiling water.
  4. Leave the roses in the water until the water is lukewarm.
  5. Cut about 1/4 inch off the stems.
  6. Transfer the roses to a vase filled with cool water.
