Red Velvet Cake Recipe

This old recipe for homemade red cake is from Grandma Marie (born in 1914). She gave me this recipe in 1966, shortly after I married her son. She and her husband made this recipe for years and years before that (and many years after that)! This old recipe is probably from the 1940s or earlier.
Cream 1/2 cup Crisco and 1-1/2 cup sugar
Add and beat: 2 eggs
Add and mix: 1 ounce red coloring, 1 cup buttermilk, and 1 teaspoon vanilla
Add: 2 cups cake flour, 1 teaspoon soda, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1 teaspoon vanilla
Pour in two greased and floured 8 inch pans.
Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes.
Frost with Red Velvet Cake Frosting.
